Eliot Teltscher Ultimate Tennis Biography

Eliot Teltscher is a former American tennis player who was ranked amongst World's Top 10 three times between 1980-84. He achieved a career high ATP singles ranking of No.6 in 1982 and the following year won the French Open Mixed Doubles title. Teltscher was born in Palos Verdes, California and lives in Irvine, California. He began playing tennis at the age of nine and by the time of 17, he was ranked in the top ten in the United States junior rankings. In 1979, Teltscher turned Pro and the right-hander was a worldwide top 10 player from 1980-82. Meanwhile, he was ranked among the USA's Top Ten Singles players for seven of eight years between 1980-88. As a professional, he won ten Grand Prix singles championships, including the San Francisco, Atalanta, Johannesburg and Japan Open titles.

During the 1981 French Open, he and his partner Terry Moor made it to the finals of Men's Doubles event. In 1983, he and Barbara Jordan won the mixed doubles title. Meanwhile he made it to the quarterfinals of the US Open in 1980, 1981 and 1983 where each time he was defeated by Jimmy Connors.

Teltscher’s career singles victories numbered 399, and doubles wins were 161. In doubles, he was US No.6 in 1979, with Francisco Gonzalez, No. 4 in 1980 with Terry Moor and No.8 in 1981 again with Moor. He was also in the US Davis Cup team in 1982, 1983 and 1985 and his team defeated France in 1982.

Teltscher was a UCLA All-American in 1977 and 1978 and when he retired from competitive tennis, he became a coach. He served as the coach for Justin Gimelstob, Richey Reneberg (1997), Jeff Tarango (1995), Pete Sampras, Jim Grabb (1992), Phillip King and others. He was also a United States National coach from 1998 to 2001.

Teltscher was named USTA Director of Tennis Operations in December 2002 and in 2003, he was named the Pan American Games Men’s coach.
