Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water — Suffolk County on Friday announced more beach closures due to “excess bacteria.”
There’s been a rash of reports citing contaminated seawater across New York and New Jersey, and health officials warned swimming could result in gastrointestinal illness, infections of the eyes, ears, nose and throat.
Newly red-taped beaches include Blue Point’s Corey Beach, Terraces on the Sound Beach in Rocky Point, Benjamin’s Memorial Beach in Bay Shore, Short Beach in Smithtown, Nissequogue Point Beach, Sayville Marina Park Beach, Bayport Beach and West Islip Beach.
Valley Grove Beach in Eatons Neck, Tanner Park Beach in Copiague and Lake Ronkonkoma’s Islip Town Beach had already been closed.
All of the beaches will remain closed until health officials determine that the sites are safe for swimming.
Around 190 county beaches remain open.
