*WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Outer Banks*

Season 3 of Outer Banks introduces a new villain for the Pogues to contend with in the form of Caribbean kingpin, Carlos Singh, who is introduced on the Netflix series when Kiara and Rafe are imprisoned at his mansion on Barbados.

Rafe wants to work with Kiara to escape but she is very wary about trusting him over what he’s done to the Pogues and his sister, Sarah, in the past but what exactly did he do to warrant such a reaction?

Kiara imprisoned with Rafe

Season 3 of Outer Banks begins with the Pogues stranded on a desert island, which they dub Poguelandia, until they are discovered by a plane that takes them to Barbados.

The gang doesn’t trust the pilot, believing him to be working with the villainous Ward Cameron, but in reality, he’s an associate of someone far more dangerous, Carlos Singh.

While most of the Pogues escape, Kiara is captured and taken to Singh’s compound where she encounters Rafe who is attempting to sell the Cross of Santo Domingo to the Caribbean crime lord.

However, Singh has different plans as he wants to use Kie and Rafe to help him find a new treasure, the lost city of El Dorado, and he keeps them imprisoned until they make their decision of whether to help him or not.

Rafe wants to try and work with Kiara so that they can escape but Kiara initially refuses, saying that she can’t trust him after everything he’s done, from killing Sheriff Peterkin back in season 1 to what he’s done to his own sister, Sarah.

What did Rafe do to Sarah in Outer Banks?

Rafe almost killed Sarah on multiple occasions during season 2 of Outer Banks.

In episode 2 of the second season, he accidentally shot Sarah as she, John B and Cleo stole a truckload of gold from him and Ward.

Sarah very nearly died from the incident and was only saved by a trip to a backstreet doctor and some desperate CPR from John B.

When Ward confronts Rafe about shooting his own sister, Rafe says that he doesn’t care that he did as she was working against her own family.

Later in the season, in episode 5, Rafe tricks Sarah into meeting him and he tries to drown her after she attempts to flee.

Sarah is moments away from death once again but is saved at the last minute when her former Kook love interest, Topper, arrives out of nowhere to drag Rafe off her.

What happens to Rafe in season 3?

Rafe continues to be a thorn in the Pogues’ sides throughout season 3 until he and his father finally see eye to eye and he begins his road to redemption.

After escaping from Singh’s compound in episode 2, he and Kiara manage to get to his boat at the harbor but as they’re preparing to leave, she throws him overboard as she still doesn’t trust him and also wants to save her friends which he refuses to do.

Rafe eventually manages to get back to the Outer Banks himself and he continues his villainous ways by stealing the Cross of Santo Domingo from under the noses of the Pogues and against the wishes of his father who had planned to donate it to begin atoning for his past actions.

As the season progresses, Rafe teams up with his criminal partner, Barry, and together, they melt down the cross and begin selling the gold off in smaller, manageable quantities.

Doing so results in his and Ward’s relationship deteriorating even further and the pair have several more heated arguments as the season goes on which eventually leads to Rafe asking Barry to have his father killed.

In episode 9, Rafe has a change of heart and he confronts Barry, who reveals that he’s already hired a hitman to carry out the deed.

Rafe rushes off to save his father and arrives to find Ward and the hitman in a struggle after Ward has been stabbed in the leg.

In the chaos Rafe manages to fight off the hitman and save his father, but not before Ward – who is believed to be dead – is recognized by a local fisherman and they’re forced to flee.

Rafe helps Ward to escape on his plane, which is preparing to take the Pogues down to South America, and just before the aircraft departs, Ward finally tells Rafe that he’s proved himself and that he loves him.

His father’s approval is something that Rafe has been craving since back in season 1 and hearing this, could well be the start of Rafe’s redemption arc heading into season 4.

Season 3 of Outer Banks is available to stream now on Netflix after releasing on Thursday, February 23, 2023.
